One of the few things Mandy Sellars wanted out of life was something many people tried to avoid.

“In life, a lot of people don’t like to be labeled as this or that or the other,” Sellars said. “But all my life, I’ve been kind of searching for a label for myself.”

The label, she thought, would be the answer to a mystery that her doctors had not been able to solve. “There’s been hardly any contact with doctors,” she said. “I’ve been kind of, in my own words, put on the shelf and kind of forgotten about.”

Sellars is 33 years old and weighs 285 pounds. Her upper torso is a petite size 8 and accounts for only about 70 or 80 pounds of her weight. The rest is in her legs and feet.

“When I was born, there was a noticeable difference between my upper body and my lower body,” Sellars said. “They didn’t actually expect me to live further than about a few, a few days or so.”

As school begins, health officials and parents across the country are bracing for this year’s bout of what some call “super lice,” drug-resistant critters that fend off nearly all pesticides, even as experts say better treatments for the ancient, annoying condition may be waiting in the wings.

Researchers have been warning for years that head lice in the U.S. and around the world are developing immunity to the strong insecticides used in over-the-counter and prescription shampoos. It takes just three to five years for the bugs to adapt to a new product, despite claims to the contrary by the manufacturers, noted Shirley C. Gordon, an associate professor at Florida Atlantic University who studies persistent head lice.

Just in case parents didn’t notice before, schools in the UK will send them an official letter saying that their kids are … fat!

Parents are to receive official letters telling them if their child has a weight problem under a Government crackdown on obesity, it has been announced.

From September this year it is expected that all parents who allow their child to be weighed and measured as part of the Government’s drive to solve the childhood obesity crisis will automatically receive the results through the post.

The measurements will be used to calculate the child’s Body Mass Index adjusted for their age but parents will not be told this figure.

Instead the pro-forma letter will plot where the child is on a scale from underweight, to healthy weight, overweight and very overweight.
